My apartment is on the 2nd Egyptian/3rd American floor and takes up half the floor. There are 3-4 other families in this building and 1-2 are also expats. On family has been here 9+ years apparently. We've got 3 bedrooms (one is also an office/clothes drying room), 1.5 bathrooms (one with a bidet), a decent sized kitchen, dining room, living room, washer/dryer, and 3 balconies (including my private screened-in balcony). We've go ceiling fans in the rooms, and a lot of natural light. From my balcony I see green; I'm eye level with the tops of the trees. It's a lot greener view than I expected to have when moving to Egypt, and it's very relaxing. We have a 'doorman' that speaks no English, but is very friendly and helpful. Despite the fact that he is very poor, he's always trying to share food and drink when I pass. A few times every week we have a couple mule-drawn carts pedaling fruit and veggies, and one that seems to take reusable garbage, fix it up and sell it. The other day he had an old computer, bookshelf, Clorox bottles and some newspaper.
I'm a 2 minute walk to Fudruckers, and about 8 from some great Korean restaurants. The grocery store is 10-15 minutes by foot, as are a bunch more restaurants including Indian, Chinese, Hardees and KFC. On most street corners I can find a drink stand or fruit stand. It's a pretty quiet neighborhood, and feels very safe. The Grande Mall is about a 7 minutes walk and I can grab a cab up the street at pretty much any time. The closest mosque is about a 10 minute walk, so the calls to prayer aren't that loud.
Although I really miss my view from my apartment in Jeju, I can't complain about all the space here. My current room is about the size of my last apartment. Plus we have a made come every week for about $14 and she cleans and does laundry. Not a bad setup.
On a side note, I should have a couple pictures of the kids up this weekend, so check it out again if you're bored.
